The visitor badge had her name spelled correctly, which was not guaranteed with anything printed at speed, and the photo on it suggested she'd arrived looking mildly alarmed. Mostly accurate. Eight weeks. The Sentinel's cover shoot was already calendared for week seven. She had, by her count, approximately fifty-three days before she needed to know what the story actually was.
She stood in the lobby of the Denver Wolves training facility and took it in.
The building looked practical from the street, one of those structures that announces money by not announcing it. Inside: high ceilings, clean sightlines, the kind of industrial finish meant to read as serious rather than sterile. A wall of floor-to-ceiling windows faced what she assumed was the practice ice, though the ice wasn't visible from here, only the light off it. White and slightly blue, coming through translucent glass panels at the far end of the main corridor.
She could feel the cold from where she stood. Not dramatically. A faint insistence, like the building had a different ambient temperature than the outside air and hadn't yet decided which to commit to. She'd worked one hockey piece before, three years ago, a profile of a defenseman who'd played eleven seasons with a stress fracture nobody knew about. She remembered that cold.
The woman at the front desk finished processing her credentials and handed over a lanyard with the visitor badge and a supplementary access card, explaining the difference. Margot listened and nodded and filed it. She was good at listening to several things simultaneously. She was listening to the woman, listening to the building, and listening for the name that would tell her who was coming to collect her.
"Mr. Holloway will be out in just a moment."
Margot thanked her and turned toward the corridor.
The name she'd had since the pre-trip call with the communications office three weeks ago. Ben Holloway, assistant coach, formerly the organization's analytics and systems lead. Four seasons total with the Wolves. Transitioned into the coaching role the previous spring. He was her designated access coordinator, which in her experience meant one of two things: the organization trusted him to be useful, or they trusted him not to say anything worth printing. She had found, in nearly a decade of this work, that both could be true about the same person.
She had two other things on Holloway. A photo from the organizational bio that appeared to be several years old, the kind of photo taken by someone who didn't particularly want a photo taken. And one sentence he'd contributed to a trade publication piece on analytics integration in professional hockey, eighteen months ago.
The data is there. Most organizations just aren't asking the right questions.
She'd read it four times on the flight from New York.
"Ms. Finley."
She turned.
The photo had been several years old and also somehow not quite right, the way photos of contained people often failed to capture whatever it was that made them contained. He was medium tall and not physically imposing. He wore a dark pullover and slacks that were neither formal nor casual, the clothing choices of someone for whom clothing was a solved problem. He carried a folder and a printed schedule and a second lanyard, managing all of it without appearing to manage anything.
He was looking at her with the same quality of attention she was using to look at him.
"Ben Holloway. Welcome to Denver."
She crossed the lobby and shook his hand. "Margot Finley. Thank you for the access."
"We'll start with the parameters and the week's schedule," he said, "then I can walk you through the facility before morning skate wraps up. Any questions before we start?"
She had seventeen, organized by priority. "Just one. Is there coffee?"
He looked at her for a fraction of a second in a way that might have been surprise or reassessment. "Yes," he said.
"Perfect."

He brought her to a conference room on the coaching side of the building. She registered this. She'd been in enough of these intake meetings to know that the location told you something. Media room meant managed access. Visitor reception meant courtesy access. Coaching wing meant something closer to real access. She didn't know yet whether it was habit or intention. She would.
The coffee was good. She said so. He said nothing, which told her he hadn't made it and didn't consider it his to take credit for.
She opened her notebook. Physical, not digital. It worked better. Digital looked like a transcript in progress. A physical notebook said you were being selective, that some things were worth recording and some weren't, that the person across from you was being heard rather than processed. It made people feel chosen.
Holloway looked at it briefly and then at the schedule he was spreading across the table, and she could not read what he thought of it.
"Eight weeks, as agreed," he said. "Full facility access within the parameters your editor approved. Practice observation from the gallery. Ice level requires advance approval from the coaching staff and goes through me. Locker room access is pre and post-game, pool media basis, coordinated through communications. Film sessions are coaching-staff materials and are off the record unless specifically flagged otherwise. Any interview with coaching personnel is scheduled through me, minimum twenty-four hours' notice."
"And players?"
"Through communications. I'll handle introductions but scheduling is separate."
She wrote down the contact name he gave her. "What about you?"
He looked up from the schedule. "What about me?"
"You're coaching staff. So interviews with you go through you."
The room wasn't exactly quiet. She could hear, faintly, the sound of something on ice. The distant percussion of a drill running.
"I'm available for questions about the analytics program and coaching integration," he said. "That's where I can give you the most useful context."
"Got it." She wrote something in her notebook. She felt rather than saw him not look at what she wrote.
She moved through the rest of it methodically. The road trip in week three, team events outside regular practice and game days, the organization's media policy if things went deep into the spring. He answered everything quickly and without hedging. No institutional PR language, no redirects to communications for questions he clearly knew the answers to himself.
She had interviewed hundreds of people inside professional sports organizations. Most of them, regardless of how capable they were at their actual jobs, had absorbed the organizational habit of shaping information rather than simply giving it. Not lying. Managing how things landed.
Holloway did not do this. He answered the question, and that was all.
She found this considerably more interesting than the alternative.
"Anything else before I take you through the facility?" he said.
She checked her notes. "I don't think so."
He began collecting the materials from the table. She capped her pen. She was about to stand when she asked it, and she knew, even as the words were forming, that it wasn't for the piece.
The piece was organizational. The Wolves' analytics infrastructure, the coaching integration, the system. She'd get to all of it. This question was not about the system. It was about the specific thing he'd said in that trade publication, and the thing that didn't add up about a man who had apparently spent three years building better models and then decided models weren't enough.
"How long ago did you actually make the move?" she said. "From analyst to coach."
He'd been halfway to the door. He stopped.
"Formally, last spring. The transition was gradual. I'd been working alongside the coaching staff for two of the three seasons before that."
"What made you do it?"
He looked at her. Not the calibrating look from the lobby. Something that was less managed than that, or rather something that appeared before he'd quite had time to manage it.
"The analysis tells you what's happening," he said. "It doesn't change what's happening. I wanted to be closer to the part that changes things."
She did not reach for her notebook.
She looked at him for a moment and he looked back, and neither of them said anything else about it, and then he said the gallery entrance was this way, and they went.

The gallery overlooked the practice ice through a long pane of glass that muted the sound to a low, procedural hum. She pressed her notebook against the railing and looked down.
Eighteen players running a neutral zone transition drill. A goalie coach crouched at the crease with strong opinions about footwork. An assistant tracking something on a tablet at the far end of the bench area. The head coach, Patterson, a large man she'd met briefly in the corridor, moved along the boards with the controlled restlessness of someone who would always rather be on the ice than beside it.
She'd half-expected Holloway to leave her with the schedule and a time to be collected. He stayed. He stood a few feet to her left with his arms crossed and his tablet angled slightly away, watching the drill below. He had a headset on now, one earpiece, the other loose at his jaw.
She spent the first ten minutes watching the drill itself. The lines, the reads, the way the rotation worked. She'd spent the night before watching game footage from the last two seasons, enough to have a rough orientation: who the stars were, what Patterson's system prioritized, what the Wolves had built that was drawing organizational attention across the league.
Then she watched Holloway.
He was still in the same way she'd noticed in the conference room. Not the stillness of someone waiting. The stillness of someone actively processing. Every thirty seconds or so he made a note on his tablet, unhurried, unreactive. He was tracking something specific. The drill had twelve moving parts and he was watching one of them.
At some point Patterson said something in the headset. Holloway touched his ear and answered. Two sentences, maybe three. The drill shifted below. She couldn't identify exactly what had changed until the player at the top of the zone made a different read on the next repetition, and the transition clicked the way the previous four hadn't. Patterson said something to his nearest assistant. The assistant nodded.
Holloway had already looked back at his tablet.
She wrote: authority isn't volume. It's being right so consistently that people stop needing the volume.
She underlined it. Considered it. Added a small star in the margin and turned the page.
She wrote other things over the following forty minutes. Statistics of a different kind: who deferred to whom and in what situations, where the status lines were on the ice and off it, which players made eye contact with the gallery glass and which ones didn't know anyone was watching. She wrote down a question she'd ask Patterson when the time came. She wrote down two things she'd ask the team captain.
She did not write down what Holloway had said about wanting to be closer to the part that changes things. She didn't need to. It was already somewhere she'd be able to find it.
At one o'clock, an escort arrived. She thanked Holloway for the morning. He said it had been efficient, which, in whatever economy he was operating in, she was fairly certain counted as a compliment.
She told him she'd have the week one scheduling requests to him by end of day.
"That works," he said.
She followed the escort to the elevator.
In the lobby, waiting for the parking structure app to load on her phone, she stood with her notebook open and read back the last thing she'd written.
Authority isn't volume. It's being right so consistently that people stop needing the volume.
There was a star next to it.
Eight weeks. The piece was organizational: the analytics program, the coaching integration, the system they'd built. That was the assignment. That was what she was here to write.
She closed the notebook.
She pressed the elevator button.
She told herself she had plenty of time.
