Fourteen hockey players walked into the room before the captain did, and Nadia Santos catalogued each of them by habit.

The big defenseman who took the seat nearest the door: territorial by positioning, preferred clear exit routes, probably the first to challenge her program openly or the first to need it quietly. The rookie center who dropped into the chair next to him and immediately took out his phone: young enough to perform casual, not yet experienced enough to make it convincing. The veteran winger who came in with a coffee thermos and positioned himself along the side wall rather than taking a chair: older player, liked to reserve his commitment physically until he'd decided where he stood on something. She had seen that pattern in three locker rooms before this one.

She knew the numbers. Teams with integrated sports psychology programs showed measurable improvements in decision-making under pressure, injury recovery timelines, and win rates in one-goal games. She also knew that none of those numbers were what the next forty-five minutes were actually about.

What the next forty-five minutes were about was the room in front of her.

Nadia had been hired six weeks ago and had spent four of those weeks reading everything the Denver Wolves organization would give her. Game footage, player profiles, coaching assessments, injury histories, the internal documentation that lived in the grey area between HR and performance reporting. She had notes on twenty-three players. She had a presentation that was honest about what her program could and could not deliver. She had three examples of teams where integration had worked and two where it hadn't, because she had found over time that telling people only the success stories made them trust you less, not more.

The GM, Marcus Webb, had told her on her second day: "You'll get the team. Cole is going to be your project."

She had asked whether that was a warning or an encouragement.

He'd said: "Depends on the week."

The film room was smaller than she'd expected for a franchise at this level. Padded chairs in loose rows, a projection screen at the front, team branding on every available wall surface in the particular aggressive way of organizations that wanted visitors to feel the brand before they felt anything else. The equipment staff had arranged the seating in theater format, which she hadn't requested, which told her something about how the organization expected this introduction to go. Passive audience. One-directional information. She had been in that arena. She had been one of the people watching.

"This is not about feelings," she said. "This is about performance under pressure. What happens in your head in the last two minutes of a tied game is as trainable as what happens with your hands."

The room was paying attention. Not enthusiastically, not yet, but she wasn't asking for enthusiasm. Attention was the only thing she needed today.

The door opened at eleven fifty-nine.

She did not stop speaking.

She registered it, noted the subtle shift in how the room's energy moved, and kept her eyes on the group in front of her. She had learned a long time ago not to interrupt herself for a late arrival. Interrupting herself meant the late arrival now controlled the room, and she had spent considerable effort to get the room.

From the edge of her vision she was aware of someone moving to the back row. Taking the far left chair. Not settling in or adjusting the way people do when they're finding their space. Just sitting, the way certain men sit when they want to signal that they will occupy whatever space they decide to occupy and the chair is incidental.

She clicked to the next slide.

The next twelve minutes went the way she'd planned. She covered the structure of her program: what individual sessions would look like, what team-wide protocols she intended to implement before the regular season, why she needed access to the coaching staff's game-planning schedule. She asked three questions of the group and got engaged answers from two players and polite silence from the rest, which at a first session with a professional hockey team was a genuinely good result.

The rookie center, a kid named Calloway who had the particular energy of someone who had been told he was exceptional so many times he'd started to treat it as infrastructure rather than achievement, raised his hand with a question she hadn't been asked before. She told him so and answered it directly, and watched him sit up slightly in his chair. She filed that away. He'd be back.

Then she reached the section of her presentation that required her to look at the back row.

She had read his file three times. She had watched thirty hours of game footage across the past four seasons. She had read four profile pieces spanning a decade, and in each of them, the writer's frustration at not being able to extract anything genuinely personal from him had been unmistakable even through the professional language.

She had prepared for controlled and closed and professionally impenetrable.

She had not fully prepared for the specific quality of his attention when he chose to give it.

He was watching her. Not in the way most of the room was watching her, which was the ordinary combination of assessment and mild skepticism and the particular doubt that appeared on the faces of people being asked to trust something new. He was watching her the way she watched people when she was trying to understand how something worked. Methodical. Without expression. As if she were a mechanism he hadn't yet categorized.

She held his gaze for the count of one sentence and then moved on to the next player. She didn't look at him again for the rest of the presentation.

When she finished, she asked for questions.

Three hands. She answered each one without hedging and without the over-eager certainty that she had seen undermine other people in her position, the reflex to promise too much because a room of skeptics made you want to prove yourself faster than was honest. The defenseman near the door, whose name she'd memorized as Reyes, asked whether her sessions were mandatory. He was looking at her.

That considering expression had not changed. And he said nothing.

Every profile she had read on him described the same thing in different words: he gave the press exactly what they needed and never anything more, he had been involved in zero off-ice incidents in twelve years of professional play, he managed every public-facing interaction with a precision that journalists found maddening because it left them with nothing to work with. One writer had described it, with barely concealed frustration, as the "performance of a man with no interior life," which Nadia had found telling in a different direction than the writer had intended. Men with no interior life didn't require that level of management.

She had also noticed, in the footage, a tell. Small enough that most people would miss it and specific enough that she was fairly confident she wasn't imagining it. When he was processing something he was not going to say, his jaw set fractionally tighter and his attention sharpened rather than withdrew. He was doing it right now, looking at her from the back row of the film room.

He was thinking something.

He was absolutely not going to say it.

"All right," she said to the room. "Individual sessions start next week. You'll have calendar invites this afternoon. I'm in the facility every Tuesday and Wednesday, and those days my office is open if anything comes up before we're scheduled."

Players stood. The room filled with the sounds of people leaving: chairs on the floor, someone asking Calloway about extra ice time, the veteran winger rinsing his thermos in the hallway. Nadia gathered her laptop and clicked through her slides to close them, keeping her movements unhurried. She had found that how you gathered your things at the end of a first session communicated as much as anything you'd said during it.

She looked up when most of the room had emptied.

Reyes was at the door. Kowalski, the veteran winger, had stopped to exchange a few words with one of the younger defensemen near the back wall. Two more players were still in conversation by the chairs.

Grayson Cole was the last one still seated. She pulled up her notes on her laptop and added two lines under his name.

Will not ask for what he needs. Waits for something to be worth his time.

She paused.

Everything I say will have to be worth his time. This is going to be a problem.

She had seven session calendars to build before end of day, three emails from the assistant coaches to return, and a standing meeting with Webb tomorrow morning where he would ask how the introduction had gone. She would tell him it had gone well, because it had gone well. Fourteen players had shown up engaged enough to ask questions or respond when addressed, which for a first session with a professional hockey team in October was a solid outcome.

She picked up her bag.

She had read his file three times.

She had told herself it was thoroughness.

She told herself a lot of things.
